SMSG Curriculum

The Archdiocesan curriculum guidelines, consistent with the State of Indiana Academic Standards, are followed for the teaching of all secular subject areas. St. Michael-St. Gabriel Archangels Catholic School offers students opportunities for growth in the following major subjects:

  • The majority of the religion curriculum is composed of Catholic doctrine and tradition, Bible study, and Catholic Social Teaching.
  • Liturgical services are typically held on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the school community for grades PK-5 and 6-8. All school Masses are also held at least once a month.
  • Students in Grades 5 and 8 will take the NCEA ACRE assessment in January of each year. The ACRE assessment measures a student’s knowledge of Catholic doctrine.

Language Arts and Reading

  • Students learn reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary), library skills, and appreciation of literature.
  • We use reading programs, such as Reading A-Z, Headsprout, and Accelerated Reading, to measure a student’s reading comprehension and reading level.

  • English grammar and composition are taught with a focus on MLA documentation as a separate class in grades 6-8.

  • Mathematics Skills, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra I are taught in the school.
  • In order to allow teachers to meet students’ individual needs in mathematics instruction, students are placed into leveled math groups.

  • General Sciences and Laboratory Experiences are included.

Social Studies

  • History, Geography, Economics, Indiana History, and Current Events are reviewed.

  • Students have the following electives throughout the course of the week: Art, Music, PE, Technology & Spanish.

Title One

  • This service is offered through Catapult Learning. Students with math and reading difficulties and living within the IPS district may participate.
